Who we are
Where I Am (“the app”) is published by Peresoft Digital Innovations Ltd (“Peresoft”, “we”, “us”), a company founded in Nigeria. The app is offered worldwide. This policy explains what the app does with your information, including your location, and applies wherever you live. We handle personal data in line with the data protection laws that apply to you, which can include the EU and UK GDPR, the California Consumer Privacy Act and the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023.
Your location
The app asks for location permission only after you tap. Your position is read once when you open the app, when you return to it after about a minute, or when you tap refresh. It never polls your location, and it has no background location permission. Your phone’s own geocoder and, when needed, the services below turn coordinates into a place name or landmarks.
What stays on your phone
Saved places, parking spots, meeting points, recent shares and your photos of saved places are kept in the app’s private storage on your phone and are not uploaded. A place photo leaves your phone only when you share that place. There is no account and no location history.
Services that receive your location
Some features need a connection. When you use them, the coordinates needed for the request are sent without any account or identifier:
- Place names and landmarks, nearby search, place details and directions go through Peresoft’s location service, hosted on Supabase. It relays the request to map data providers: OpenStreetMap services (Overpass, Nominatim, OSRM), TomTom and, if switched on, Google Maps Platform, and may cache results for a few hours using a grid of about 1.1 km. Each provider handles the request under its own privacy policy.
- Our service logs record the type of request, which provider answered, how long it took, any error, and the area at about 11 km precision, for 14 days. They do not record your exact position or raw IP address.
- Map tiles are loaded from OpenFreeMap / OpenStreetMap, which can see your device’s IP address as any web server does.
Live location sharing
Live sharing is the one time the app uses your location while it is in the background. You start it yourself, choose 15 minutes, 1 hour or 8 hours, and a notification with a Stop button stays up the whole time. While it runs, the app sends your latest position to our server so people with your link can watch. We keep only the latest position for each share, remove it when you stop, and delete expired shares. Reading a share needs its random link code, and updating it needs a secret that is stored only on your phone.
Sharing your location
When you share a location by message, SMS, link or QR code, it goes to the app and people you choose. “Privacy share mode” rounds a link to about 1 km and leaves out the street, landmark and exact coordinates. Calls, including emergency numbers, start only after you tap and open in your phone’s dialler.
Analytics
The app records no analytics that identify you. It contains no analytics or advertising SDK. Events such as “nearby opened” carry only words and small numbers such as a category or a radius, and anything shaped like a coordinate is dropped.
Permissions the app asks for
- Location (precise and approximate) — to show where you are.
- Foreground service (location) — only while you share live location.
- Notifications — for the live-sharing notification.
- Internet and network state — for place names, nearby search, directions and live sharing.
Why we use your data (legal bases)
Where the GDPR or UK GDPR applies, we rely on: your consent for reading your location (you give it with the permission prompt and can withdraw it in Android settings at any time) and for live sharing, which you start yourself; performance of the service you asked for when we process the request needed to name a place, find places near you or give directions; and our legitimate interests in keeping the location service secure, preventing abuse and fixing errors, using the short-lived logs described above.
International transfers
Peresoft is based in Nigeria, and our location service and the map providers named above may process requests in the European Union, the United States or elsewhere. We send only the data a request needs, with no account or identifier, and rely on safeguards such as the providers’ standard contractual commitments. Each provider applies its own privacy policy.
No sale of personal data
We do not sell personal data, we do not share it for cross-context behavioural advertising, and the app contains no advertising. If you live in California or another place with similar rights, you do not need to opt out of anything.
Your rights and control
You can stop live sharing at any time, delete saved places and recent shares in the app, revoke location permission in Android settings, or uninstall the app, which removes everything stored on your phone. Depending on where you live, you may also have the right to ask us for access to, correction of, deletion of or a copy of personal data we hold, to object to or restrict processing, and to withdraw consent. The app has no account and we keep no location history, so the data we could hold is limited to a live share’s latest position, until you stop it, and the short-lived service logs, which do not contain your exact position or raw IP address. Make a request through the Contact page. You may also complain to your local data protection authority.
Children
Where I Am is not directed at children under 13 (or under the higher age at which local law requires a parent’s consent, such as 16 in parts of the European Union) and we do not knowingly collect personal data from them. If you believe a child has given us personal data, contact us and we will delete it.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version is published on this page and the “last updated” date changes. Where a change is significant we will also tell you in the product.
